I learned about the concept of "catastrophic forgetting" while reading about AI neural networks. It's basically the propensity for a neural network with an attention span of a few characters to lose track of what it was replicating and veer off somewhere else, depending on what kind of data was in its training set — so a neural network tasked to create new cookie recipes could suddenly flip over to writing Star Trek fan fiction about making cookies, and then forget about cookies altogether.

Besides being part of the non-linear, uncanny valley charm of neural net creations, I thought that aligned somehow with the music I was making at the time. Trying to rely less on static loops, the improvisations I was doing could also sometimes get focused on one small sonic element, and then warp or bend it and keep going with that as the sonic centre, sometimes coming back to the original sound, but often losing it in the drift. But (hopefully) still getting somewhere interesting.
